In the event the internet first started, or first came into the general consciousness of almost all people in America it was very little of anything. I can remember playing some very rudimentary games depending on the Nickelodeon television show The Secret World of Alex Mack. I remember reading some really terrible articles about several of my favorite bands. But mostly, I remember being nonplussed about the whole thing. What was this thing going to do for me other than have me hunched over a desk reading low quality junk?
Well obviously the jury is no longer out via the internet and we all now and seemingly will forever live on the web. It has made communication easier but also fundamentally different. The same may be said about shopping and researching subjects of interest. It has made a wealth and selection of entertainment completely free. This last one is likely the largest shift for me personally and then for a amount of people I know also. It is because things like the film theater begin to lose their luster whenever you discover that you may watch free watching full series movies online. It becomes hard to rationalize the $12 price tag most theaters are charging these days whenever you can get new free movies online. Not that the largeness of the theater will not have its charms. If I can watch documentaries online, like those produced by PBS, why would I bother having a television not to mention paying ever rising cable costs?
The Web is a vast wonderland of entertainment available whenever you want it with little to understand cost at all. There is a bad element to all of this as always, mostly that it is now increasingly difficult for artists and entertainers to receive money for the work that they may be doing. Still there is definitely an upside as well. With the ease it takes to put funny videos online or your weird short films online nearly anyone can release their work as well as have it seen by a wide variety of folks. As a result people are willing to check out things they might not have seen back once they were seriously considering the best way to best utilize their precious entertainment money.
I think at this point it’s best for the whole world to check out a great deal of different things on the net from free indie films to short films, but to also take the leap and hit up the theater every now and again or maybe occasionally buy a DVD. This seems like the best way to keep the films I want coming and keep myself informed.
